Exam Papers : Information of Railway Recruitment Exams

With some 9,000 trains carrying 15 million passengers through 7,000 stations every day.
Indian Railway Department is the second Largest Department of the world. The Railway recruitment Board of every regions does recruitment in this department.The 19 Railway Recruitment Boards in India (RRBs) have been functioning as prime recruiting agencies for all Zonal Railways, Production Units and other extra Zonal units of the Indian Railways. The Group C posts include assistant station masters, drivers, motormen, guards, signal and mechanical inspectors. Here again, staff are divided into technical and non-technical staff.

The Information about the selection procedure is given below:
Technical and Non Technical Cadre Exam

The management cadre of the Indian Railways consists of Class I and Class II Gazetted Officers. Direct recruitment to the Class I Railway services is made through the Union Public Service Commission on the basis of annual competitive examinations. Recruitment to the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) and the Indian Railways Accounts Service (IRAS) is done on the result of the Civil Services Examination and that to the Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE), Indian Railway Services of Signal Engineers (IRSSE) and Indian Railway Store Service (IRSS) is made on the basis of the combined Engineering Service of Mechanical Engineers, there is a dual method. Approximately 50 per cent of the candidates are recruited through the Combined Engineering Services Examination. The remaining 50 per cent are recruited as special class Apprentices for which the UPSC conducts a separate competitive examination every year.

So far as the recruitment to Class II services is concemed, the entire Class II service is manned by personnel promoted from subordmate ranks from Class III by a process, of selection on the basis of merit. Class III service is composed of literate class of employees, both technical and non-technical. These cover a large number of categories such as Clerks, Station Masters, Ticket Collectors, Guards, Drivers,Workshop Chargemen, Foremen, etc. Initial requirement to technical Class III services in the Engineering Signalling and Telecommunication Engineering and electrical departments are of two types, namely, one to the class of skilled tradesmen and the other to the class of initial supervisors, Chargemen, Assistant Inspectors of Ways and Works, Assistant Signalling and Telecommunication Inspectors, etc. The formers are drawn from trade apprentices and the later recruited from candidates having diploma qualification in the upper branch of Engineering speciality.

Recruitment of the non-technical categories in Class III services, i.e., Clerks, Assistant Station Masters, Ticket Collectors, Train Clerks, etc., is done through direct recruitment to these categories by a competitive examination conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards. These Boards are located at Allahabad, Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Chandigarh, Jammu, Gorakhpur, Patna, Guwahati, Calcutta, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Trivandrum, Bangalore, Secunderabad, Mumbai, Bhopal, Malda, Ranchi, etc. The Boards advertise the vacancies through Newspapers/ Employment News and conduct both written examinations and interviews.

Qualification : Matriculation with minimum 50% marks. Typewriting proficiency of 30 wpm in English or 25 wpm in Hindi

* Junior Accounts Assistant
Qualification : Graduation. Typewriting proficiency of 30 wpm in English
Age Limit : 18-30 yrs
* Clerk-cum-Typist
Qualification : Graduation. Minimum Typing speed of 40 wpm in English
Age Limit : 18-30 yrs
* Stenographer(English/Hindi)
Qualification : Matriculation or Equivalent (with certificate of 80 wpm in English/Hindi Stenography and 40 wpm in English/20 wpm in Hindi Typewriting speed)
Age Limit : 18-33 yrs
* Typist (English/Hindi)
Qualification : Matriculation (with Typewriting peed of 40 wpm in English/25 wpm in Hindi)
